If you want more bang for your buck, switch your thinking when it comes to peak nutrition.<br />
Find the best places to shop for produce. Plan once a week shopping.<br />
<br />
Center your meals around the raw herbs and vegetables instead of the meat.
<br />
<br />
Meal Planning Guide:<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Spinach salad with almonds and carrots</li>
<li>Sliced sweet bell peppers of varying colors</li>
<li>Diced tomatoes, chopped chives and fresh parsley. Sprinkle with fresh, squeezed lemon</li>
<li>Avocado slices, chopped tomatoes, fresh cilantro sprinkled with fresh lime</li>
<li>Sliced peaches and mango with a wedge of lettuce</li>
<li>Blanched sugar snap peas and walnuts</li>
<li>Grilled Chinese cucumber, sprinkled with EV olive oil and Italian blend seasoning</li>
</ul>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>How do you view food intake within your Christ-centered life?</b></div>
<br />
Do you blame food (Good Food, Bad Food Theory) for your medical condition? Do you view certain foods as an instrument of evil (seriously, many of us do this).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
=or=</div>
<br />
Is food intake a part of your over-all, healthy lifestyle? Do you view food as a series of choices?<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li> I can choose not to eat certain foods and I can choose what I want to include in my diet?</li>
<li> I can demand that food companies provide honest knowledge of their food ingredients, processing and packaging. But, I will not allow this to create negative stress in my life.</li>
<li>I can learn what foods make me feel good and what foods make me feel bloated and yucky (very fitting word, if you ask me).</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Take charge of your choices. Start with daily dialogue with God.</div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Many herbs are easy to grow and abundant at food stores. Herb gardening</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"> has been around for centuries...used for medicinal purposes, to flavor foods, and for their nutrient properties. We can harvest, rinse, dry and bottle, but what else can we do?</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<b><span style="color: #38761d;">Mint i</span></b>s an herb that grows like crazy and often needs to be cut-back or grown in a container. Many people decide to grow a small amount in a pot on their window sill. Others prefer to pick up a few sprigs at their local Farmer's Market</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Herbs grown for consumption should be grown in a place where animals do not have access. Always rinse your herbs well before storing or eating. There are many good reference books for herb gardening, one is: <i style="line-height: 1.65em;">Encyclopedia of Herb Gardening, Consultant Editor Francis Hutchinson</i>, ISBN 1 877019 94-1.</div>

<b><i>Ideas for Lent:</i></b></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
Fish from clean waters contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and essential amino acids. <a class="" href="http://www.americanheart.org/" style="color: blue !important; cursor: text !important; line-height: 1.65em;" target="_blank">The American Heart Association</a> recommends eating at least two servings of fish per week. Tomatoes provide fiber, vitamins A and C, and the antioxidant licopene. Combining fish and tomatoes with the smooth texture of sour cream will provide a mouth-watering meal.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Bake</b></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
Rinse and pat dry fish such as tilapia, flounder or orange roughy and place in a baking dish coated with non-stick cooking spray. Cook the fish half-way and then top with a blend of stewed or fresh chopped tomatoes, shredded Parmesan cheese, minced onion, halved garlic cloves, oregano, pepper and sour cream. Squeeze the juice from fresh lemons over the cooked fish before serving on rice and top with dried parsley to add color to the fish meal.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Pan-Fry</b></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
Rinse, pat dry and rub a mixture of flour, bread crumbs, paprika, parsley and pepper over both sides of boned fish such as sole, cod or tilapia. Place the coated fish in a fry pan with hot olive oil and brown on both sides. Add a mix of cubed tomatoes, sour cream, snipped chives, pressed garlic cloves, lemon zest and oregano or marjoram to the pan fried fish and continue cooking until the fish flakes easily.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Sandwiches</b></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
Grill salmon steaks that have been lightly coated with extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice. Top the cooked salmon steaks with thick tomato slices and sour cream that has been whisked with crushed garlic cloves and dill. Serve the dressed salmon steaks between two thick slices of toasted bread such as Texas toast, rye or ciabatta bread. For a quick sandwich, blend imitation crab meat with sour cream, fresh dill and finely minced, sweet onions. Serve the crab blend on sandwich bread with Roma or beefsteak tomato slices and lettuce.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Pasta</b></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
Boil whole wheat rigatoni and blend with a simmered mix of tomato sauce, tomato slices, chopped red, yellow and green bell peppers, sliced black olives, oregano, garlic and pepper. Fill a platter with the pasta blend and then top the pasta with cooked white fish or salmon and sliced lemon rounds. Place a large dollop of sour cream that has been mixed with dill and lemon juice on top of the fish. You can also blend light, canned tuna with angel hair pasta, small chunks of tomatoes, sour cream, extra virgin olive oil, capers and fresh oregano.</div>

<br />
<div style="background-color: white; font: normal normal normal 13px/1.22 arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; padding-bottom: 7px; padding-left: 7px; padding-right: 7px; padding-top: 7px;">
<span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;">A Review of What E. Coli is and How to Prevent Infection</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; font: normal normal normal 13px/1.22 arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; line-height: 1.65em; padding-bottom: 7px; padding-left: 7px; padding-right: 7px; padding-top: 7px;">
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
The abbreviated E. Coli stands for Escherichia (named after a German physician ) Coli (pertaining to the colon) and the <i style="line-height: 1.65em;">Mosby Medical Dictionary</i> defines it as "...a bacteria...normally present in the intestines...." In other words, all humans and animals have E. coli as the normal flora within their intestines which explains why it is the number one cause of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). The term "Flora" simply means a living organism occurring or adapted for living in a particular environment, such as your intestinal tract. E. coli has also been pegged as the main cause of "<i style="line-height: 1.65em;">traveler's diarrhea</i>."</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
It is dangerous when large colonies of E. coli are ingested and then enter the bloodstream. Children and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk for serious illness or death.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
The best way to <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">prevent E. coli infection</b> is to:</div>
<ul style="line-height: 1.65em;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Wash hands thoroughly after using the restroom or changing a diaper.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Wash hands before eating.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Wash hands after working in soil.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Cook meat to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Do not thaw at room temperature.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Disinfect counters and cutting boards.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Designate separate cutting boards for meat and produce.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Do not leave milk, eggs, or left-overs out for too long, especially during the summer.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Rinse produce in a colander in a clean sink.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Be aware that unpasteurized milk may contain E. coli.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Be alert to food recalls.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">See your doctor immediately if you have severe cramping, uncontrolled diarrhea, bloody stools or simply suspect that you have been infected.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">This is by no means a complete list. Feel free to add your own common sense practices.</li>
</ul>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
Finding the source of an E. coli outbreak is not easy and takes time. Patients reporting symptoms must complete a week-long food recall and then it needs to be analyzed and investigated.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
It may appear that America is being bombarded with way too many food recalls, but we actually have some of the strictest standards compared to other countries.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
• Do those standards need to be reviewed and improved periodically? Yes.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
• Do we need more manpower to enforce these standards? Yes.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
• Does having some of the best standards mean we shouldn't be responsible consumers? Certainly not. This is why we have some the best consumers in the world too.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
Americans, for the most part, are demanding safer food practices and they want to know <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">what</b> is in their food and <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">why</b> it's there. This is all part of the checks and balances that help keep our food harvesting, packaging, and distribution accountable.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.65em; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px;">
It's a good practice to periodically review food borne illness and how to prevent it.</div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif;">The Avocados Nutritional Density Are Why They Have Taken "Center Stage" in Many Health Studies</span></span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Avocados have been reported in a good and a bad light - a bad light because of their fat content and a good light because of their vitamin and mineral content. Now they're being studied extensively for their possible benefits to </span><a class="" href="http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5692258/rheumatoid-arthritis-osteoarthritis.html?cat=5" style="background-color: white; color: blue !important; cursor: text !important; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;" target="_blank">arthritis</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"> sufferers.</span><br />

The fact is, the fat in an avocado is monounsaturated, mostly from oleic acid, and low in saturated fat. Many companies use avocado oils in their skin care products because of its ability to penetrate beneath the epidermis more effectively. A 2007 article in: <i style="line-height: 1.65em;">Better Nutrition</i> cited that:<br />
"<i style="line-height: 1.65em;">carotenoids are best absorbed into the bloodstream when combined with dietary fat, avocados provide the perfect vehicle for delivering these nutrients into the cells."</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Jason Theodosakis, MD and author of <i style="line-height: 1.65em;">The Arthritis Cure</i> was also cited in the <i style="line-height: 1.65em;">Better Nutrition</i> article talking about avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU). This product has shown promise in improving pain and stiffness in knee and hip <span style="cursor: text !important; line-height: 1.65em;">osteoarthritis</span>. Although studies do not extend to children, pregnant or nursing women. Any trial with this new supplement should first be discussed with your doctor.</div>

Some ways to get avocados in your <span style="cursor: text !important; line-height: 1.65em;">diet</span> include cutting them up in a <a class="" href="http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/3019278/in_honor_of_national_salad_month_recipes_pg2.html?cat=5" style="cursor: text !important; line-height: 1.65em;" target="_blank"><span style="color: black;">salad</span></a><a class="" href="http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/3019278/in_honor_of_national_salad_month_recipes_pg2.html?cat=5" style="color: blue !important; cursor: text !important; line-height: 1.65em;" target="_blank">,</a> putting them on burgers including Boca burgers, and, of course, a low-fat guacamole recipe. Try visiting a recipe website and type "avocado" in the search line and you're bound to get a myriad of recipe ideas.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<i style="line-height: 1.65em;"><b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Avocado Smoothie</b></i><br />

<br />
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
It's time to merge the past with the present. How can we maximize the food bill in order to increase incoming revenue?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
1. Make large batches of <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Cookie Dough</b> and freeze in separate containers.</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Save margarine and other food tubs.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Purchase inexpensive, no-brand freezer tubs.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Thaw one tub in the refrigerator at a time, and cook in batches;</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<i style="line-height: 1.65em;">for example:</i> bake enough for everyone in the family to have 2-4 cookies. Each tub should keep for up to a week in the refrigerator as long as you don't let it sit at room temperature for prolonged periods of time.</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;"><b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Firm</b> cookie dough recipes will freeze well in freezer baggies.</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
2. Save those <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Ham Bones</b> and boil in a stock pot for a soup base. Then freeze in large tub containers.</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Use the base for potato, leek soup.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Do not add potatoes. They become grainy after freezing. Instead, add the potatoes (if desired) after thawing and cooking.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Do add onions and leeks ahead of time. Optional: add mustard seed and dill weed</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;"><b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Or,</b> use the base for bean and ham soup.</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
3. Buy large cans of <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Tomato Sauce</b> , on sale, and make tomato-based sauces and soups..</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Add ground beef, venison or small chunks of lean beef, plus onions, garlic, oregano or marjoram and finely chopped green peppers while cooking, then freeze</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Use some of the base to make minestrone soup which freezes well. Just add a little water, garbanzo beans and chopped zucchini and tomatoes.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">You can also use this base for chili. Just add some beans, such as: black beans and/or chili beans.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">You can certainly apply this process to turkey bones as well.</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
4. If you have a <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Bread Machine</b> , start making whole-grain loaves, then wrap snuggly in plastic wrap or freezer paper and freeze for later use.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
These are just a few of MANY options for saving money and time on food.</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Get together with friends and have a freezer food exchange.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Pool your money with friends and go in on bulk food items.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Look for bumped and bruised deals on fruit that can be used for freezer jam. Just cut the bruising out and use the good part.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Shop the day-old bread cart and look for bread items that are suitable for freezing.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Start a garden.</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Some of the large, bulk stores have good prices on large bags of unbleached sugar and flour. </div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif;">Easy and Inexpensive Ways to Have Fun for New Year's. </span></span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;">Keep kids healthy and happy during New Year's without the expense.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Kids tend to eat a lot during special events and that can lead to tummy aches from too many rich foods and headaches from not getting enough fluids.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<i style="line-height: 1.65em;"><u style="line-height: 1.65em;"><b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Beverages</b></u></i> <br style="line-height: 1.65em;" />Instead of filling that punch bowl with a lot of sugary fluids, how about filling it with ice and then placing several <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">water</b> bottles inside. Keep a marker handy to write the child's name on the bottle so you don't have community backwash. <br style="line-height: 1.65em;" />Kid's often complain of a headache near the end of festivities and this can be due to several factors, but dehydration may be one of them. Parties often have soda pop and juice boxes which only adds to the sugar load they're already receiving from food. This can shift the solute load within the blood stream requiring more water intake. If the body, especially that of a child, does not receive the water it requires, you can end-up with a nasty headache. <br style="line-height: 1.65em;" />Right now you can pick-up a 24 pack of water bottles for 3 to 5 dollars.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<i style="line-height: 1.65em;"><u style="line-height: 1.65em;"><b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Finger Foods</b></u></i><b style="line-height: 1.65em;"><br style="line-height: 1.65em;" /></b>Old fashioned <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">popcorn</b> can be popped on the stove and placed in individual baggies or containers. <br style="line-height: 1.65em;" />Place a small amount of olive or canola oil in a dutch oven and lightly heat on medium high, add 1 cup of popcorn kernels, cover, and shake the pot frequently (almost constantly) while gradually lowering the temperature on the stove top after it starts to pop. Remove from heat when popping starts to diminish. There really is no need to add salt as fresh popped popcorn has lots of flavor. <br style="line-height: 1.65em;" />You will get a huge bowl of popcorn that's inexpensive and not laden with preservatives and salt.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Fresh <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">oranges</b> can be rinsed, cut in half, use a knife to cut around the rim between the flesh and the rind, and then dig out with a spoon. This method is quicker and each child will receive at least half an orange (depending on how much you buy). This will help provide fiber (in addition to the popcorn), and vitamins A and C.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Wheat crackers</b> that have at least 2g of fiber per serving tend be much lower in fat than some of the other varieties. You can pre-make a cream cheese dip with a low fat block of cream cheese, softened and whipped with a 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder, dill, or whatever herb fits your fancy. Buying cream cheese by the block saves on cost. Be careful of "major-loaders"...kids who tend to have more dip than they do cracker.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Raw vegetables</b> cut in small, bite-size pieces are always a winner. They're nutrient content is rich in many vitamins and minerals. You can choose which vegetables you want to serve based on current sales if you want to save on cost. Some ideas: broccoli, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, carrot chips. <br style="line-height: 1.65em;" />Low fat, plain yogurt used as dip is a healthier alternative to sour cream dips. You can serve the yogurt plain or add a small clove of crushed garlic and mix well.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Fun foods</b> such as cookies and tarts can be added to the celebration, but place a limit on them. Save on expense by rationing out how many of the sugary or fatty foods each child may have. Or, instead of having dessert-type foods laying around for the quick grab, you can bake a cake. This way everyone gets dessert but the urge to graze at the dessert table is eliminated. <br style="line-height: 1.65em;" />If you want to place bowls of food around the house, use the popcorn for this instead of potato chips.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
For adults, if you <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">eat a meal before festivities,</b> you're likely to eat less later. This is recommended for children too, but keep in mind that they tend to eat whatever they see just for the novelty of it. This is where those picky eaters are sometimes at an advantage.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Use your best judgment when it comes to kids and holidays and have fun! <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Happy New Year!</b></div>

<br />
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;"><b>On a Shoestring Budget? Just Want to Get Healthy? Incorporate Packaged and Canned Beans into Your Diet.</b></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<b style="font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.65em;">The easiest and cheapest way to add fiber to your daily diet is by incorporating legumes.</b></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
They are a low-fat, low-sodium product. Dried beans are a plant food so there is zero cholesterol.<br />
But, they are <b style="line-height: 1.65em;">high in fiber, amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and potassium</b>.<br />
<br />
Legumes include:</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">black beans,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">garbanzo beans (chick peas),</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">chili beans,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">kidney beans,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Great Northern beans,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">split peas,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">blackeye peas (cowpeas),</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">lentils,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">lima beans,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">navy beans,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">pinto beans,</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">white beans</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">and more.....</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
The Cheapest way to purchase legumes is dried:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Before bed, pop a cup of rinsed, dried beans in a pot of water to soak over-night. In the morning, drain the water and cook according to package directions. Refrigerate or use immediately.<br />
<br />
Don't want the fuss? Buy canned legumes. They are still inexpensive especially if you catch a good sale.<br />
Tips:</div>
<ol style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Be sure to rinse canned beans in a colander to remove excess salt.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">Purchase refried beans that are labeled "vegetarian" or do not contain lard (of course, you cannot rinse refried beans so you may want to look for "low sodium" as well).</li>
</ol>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">How to</b> incorporate into popular foods: </div>
<ul style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">· Add black beans to spaghetti sauce.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">· What's a good chili without beans?</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">· Add them to green salads. They add flavor, texture, color and a host of nutrients.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">· Serve as a side dish.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">· Serve as a main course. Just mix with fresh, chopped tomatoes and herbs such as chives and basil. Throw in a few cubes of mozzarella cheese.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">· Blend into a chunky paste with onions, garlic and tomatoes for a bean dip. Options: add cilantro and fresh, squeezed lemon or lime juice.</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.65em;">· Top rice with your favorite legume.</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
The possibilities are endless! Be creative! Start a new habit. Research cooking sites for legume-based recipes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<b style="line-height: 1.65em;">Precautions</b>: Consult with a physician and a registered dietitian if you have a special medical condition, such as: kidney disease, before incorporating legumes in your diet. </div>

<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Green Bean Casserole</span></b><b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"> </span></b><b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"><br /></span></b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Skip the green bean casserole and go for the vegetarian salad with no more than a teaspoon of salad dressing. Green bean casseroles are traditionally made with cream of mushroom soup and butter which will provide you with at least 8 grams of fat per one cup serving. Plus, you can tack on a few more grams of fat if there's cheese involved. A green salad made with only fresh vegetables will provide a host of vitamins, minerals and fiber in addition to being low in fat.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Mashed Potatoes and Gravy</span></b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"> </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"><br />Mashed potatoes and gravy are the most difficult holiday favorite to avoid. But if you substitute baked yams or sweet potatoes with an herb seasoning mix, you won't be disappointed. Traditional mashed potatoes are made with butter and whole milk then served smothered in fat-laden gravy. A one cup serving of mashed potatoes and gravy will provide 10 to 18 grams of fat. A one cup serving of yams or sweet potatoes served roasted with an Italian herb blend will only cost you up to 1 gram of fat plus you'll get a healthy boost of vitamin A, folate and more than 5 grams of fiber.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Stuffing</span></b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"> </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"><br />If you're serving the turkey this year, skip the stuffing and serve wild rice instead. Your turkey will cook faster if it's not stuffed and you'll be adding a low-fat alternative to the traditional bread crumb, butter and turkey drippings, stuffing mix. Stuffing cooked in a turkey cavity will provide you with around 5-10 grams of fat where wild rice will only provide around .5 grams per ½ cup serving.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Pies</span></b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"> </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"><br />Traditional pies are made with loads of sugar and butter, lard or hydrogenated, trans-fats. For dessert this year, try fresh fruit and dip made from low-fat yogurt and pureed berries. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fruit to keep it from browning. Stick with this pie alternative and you will eliminate 10-20 grams of fat per 1/8 slice of a 9" pie.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Beverages</span></b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"> </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"><br />Forget the fatty egg nog, sugary punch or high-calorie alcoholic beverages this year and try something new. An iced mint, green tea served in a punch bowl with pureed cantaloupe as flavoring is delicious and won't make you feel bloated. Plus mint is considered an anti-spasmodic which simply means it calms the gastrointestinal tract.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Snacks</span></b><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"> </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"><br />Snacking during social events is one the first challenges to tackle in a weight loss plan. Instead of putting out potato chips for the quick grab, consider the old stand-by, vegetables and dip. A low-fat dip can be made with yogurt mixed with dill or a crushed garlic clove. Fresh vegetables can include broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, zucchini and bell peppers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; line-height: 18pt; margin-bottom: 7.5pt;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">These are just a few ideas to help you through the holidays. Keep your portions of turkey, baked not deep-fried, or ham to about a 2 ounce serving which is smaller than a deck of cards. Blaze a new trail and take control of your health with leaner foods. Just think you may become the example that others follow.</span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"> </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;"><br /><br /><b><br /></b></span></div>

What does that mean?<br />
Well, as the warmer months approach, the less we want to heat-up the kitchen by turning on the oven. Using the BBQ is fun and can be done outdoor, but we don't always feel like doing it everyday.<br />
<br />
Now is the time to start planning fresh salads that incorporate spring herbs such as chives. Chives and green onion are cheap, easy to grow (if you want), full of flavor, and can replace onions in many recipes.<br />
<br />
Try a few strips of green onion in place of that slice of onion on your hamburger.<br />
Chop-up some chives and sprinkle on that hot dog.<br />
<br />
Snip some mint and use in that iced tea.<br />
Place a few mint leaves on your chocolate ice cream.<br />

I just happened to have Gazelle.<br />
1 # Pan sausage<br />
1 c Spinach, fresh and rinsed<br />
1/2 c Basil, fresh and rinsed<br />
1 medium Onion, chopped<br />
1 medium Tomato, cut into small slices <b>or</b> use grape or cherry tomatoes, whole or sliced.<br />
1 tsp Extra virgin olive oil<br />
Pepper<br />
Texas toast (toasted)<br />
Shredded cheese (optional)<br />
<br />
Cook the sausage in a pan, turning over as needed.<br />
In another pan, lightly saute the onions in a tsp of <a href="http://www.livestrong.com/article/407240-is-extra-virgin-olive-oil-better-than-olive-oil/">olive oil.</a> Add one cut-up tomato (or you can use salsa) and the spinach and basil leaves; cook for a few minutes.<br />
Place the sausage patty on the slice of Texas toast and top with onion mixture. Sprinkle-on a little cheese and pepper if desired and enjoy!TinaRDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01624047605236650795noreply@blogger.com0
